The Weekend Show

"Hey there, night owls and early birds! You’re tuned in to Radio 854, where the hits never sleep, and neither do we! I’m Alex De Groot, spinning your favorite tracks and flipping your world upside down—literally! That’s right, tonight we’re doing things backwards. Starting with the shout-outs before the songs, ending the hour before it even begins, and playing your requests like they’re coming from the future. Got a jam […]

It all started in my childhood. When I was about ten or eleven I cut out record players and jingle covers and played radio in that way. A few years later my brother and I got a record player. I bought a few CD jingles and started playing radio in that way. Only then did I really get the taste for it. In my area there was a local radio station called Radio Atlantis. It was in 1992 that I plucked up courage and applied to Radio Atlantis to be allowed to play on the radio. I was allowed to practice in the chat room at the disco bar that was there. After about ten minutes the big boss of the radio station thought I was doing very well and he sent me to the radio studio to play my first program on the radio. I played on Radio Atlantis, which had to change its name to Radio Pros after a few months of playing there, until 2003. In 2004 I read an article in a magazine about ShoutCast and how you could broadcast with it. I tested it out and it worked very well. Then I got the idea to start a radio station myself under the name Radio Denderland. After a few days the first DJs signed up to play on my radio station. Radio Denderland became a success story with more than 2000 listeners every day. After a few years I changed the name Radio Denderland to Accent FM. The success continued but the name change turned out to be a bad move because after a few years a radio station suddenly appeared in the Netherlands with the name Accent FM which caused a lot of misunderstandings. As if that wasn’t bad enough, a radio station also appeared in Belgium with the name Radio Accent. Then the confusion was complete and I had had enough, so in 1997 I changed the name Accent FM to Radio 854
