Legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young has announced the cancellation of his planned free concert in Ukraine, citing safety concerns amid ongoing conflict in the region.
The concert, which was set to take place later this spring, was intended as a gesture of solidarity with the Ukrainian people and a message of hope through music. However, after consulting with local officials and security experts, Young made the difficult decision to pull the plug on the event, prioritizing the safety of both attendees and his team.
In a statement released on his official website, Young wrote, “It breaks my heart to cancel this show. Music has the power to bring people together, to heal, and to uplift. But after careful consideration and discussions with those on the ground, it became clear that the current situation poses too great a risk. The safety of fans, crew, and the community must always come first.”
Young has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, previously contributing to humanitarian efforts and using his platform to raise awareness. Fans had praised his initiative to offer the concert free of charge, seeing it as an emblem of unity during turbulent times.
While disappointed, many supporters expressed understanding and gratitude for Young’s continued advocacy. Social media was flooded with comments commending the artist for putting public safety above all else.
Young concluded his statement with a message of hope: “Though we can’t gather in person right now, my heart remains with the people of Ukraine. I look forward to the day when peace prevails and we can all celebrate together.”
No details have been announced regarding a possible rescheduling, but Young hinted at exploring virtual alternatives to continue supporting Ukraine from afar.
